We are saddened to announce the recent death of a former El Hogar student – Charly Benitez. Charly (now 25) graduated from our Technical Institute in 2007 and was living in Tegucigalpa at the time of his death.
According to reports we have received, Charly was riding his motorcycle with a female coworker in Tegucigalpa on May 2. A pickup truck had been trailing them and finally approached the bike. Both Charly and his passenger were shot and killed. His motorcycle was then loaded into the back of the truck and stolen. It is our understanding that this senseless act of violence was undertaken with robbery as the goal.
Our Executive Director, Matt Engleby, Elementary Director, Claudia Castro, and Technical Institute Director, Lazaro Juarez, have been providing support for the family during this terrible time of loss. In addition, El Hogar will be assisting the family with the cost of funeral arrangements. Charly is survived by five siblings and his mother.
Our utmost concern at all times is the well-being of the students in our care. We are on constant alert for their safety during their time with us. They are frequently reminded about the dangers in Tegucigalpa and surrounding areas. Unfortunately, when our students graduate we are unable to provide the constant protection that they have within our walls.
We are a family and we mourn the lives that have been lost during this terrible ordeal. The violence in Honduras underscores the importance of the work we do with these children each day and challenges us to do more.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you might have. Matt Engleby, our Executive Director in Honduras, can be reached via email at email@example.com; Liz Kinchen, our Executive Director in North America, can be reached via email at firstname.lastname@example.org and by phone at 781-729-7600.
Our organization, our staff, and our students appreciate your prayers and support during this difficult time.
