El Hogar has been fortunate to have a strong connection
to Canada for many years with the help of some generous and dedicated
people:
Margo Mingay and her husband, Rev. Dr. David Winsor, both from
Toronto, served as the Co-Executive Directors of El Hogar Projects
from 1998-2000. They are each still involved in supporting El Hogar.
Margo Mingay is the Canadian Advisor to El Hogar Ministries, and
also serves as the Sponsor Assignment Coordinator for the US and
Canada. Rev. Dr. David Winsor spreads the word of El Hogar through
speaking engagements at churches and organizations throughout the
US and Canada. If you are interested in contacting Rev. Winsor
to schedule a speaking event, please contact him directly, at minwin@sympatico.ca .
Two hugely successful golf tournaments have
been
hosted by West Vancouver resident and El Hogar supporter, Kent
Bubbs. His Universal Outreach Foundation is a Canadian charity
that raises funds for El Hogar’s new Technical Institute,
which is undergoing a large expansion project. Read
details on the Fall 2006 Fore the Boys
Golf Tournament.
In the Vancouver area, there is strong support for El Hogar among
the Rotary Clubs, spearheaded by Ian Rose, a former Rotary President.
The Rotary Club of West Vancouver Sunrise recently filled a container
of appliances, clothing and other goods and shipped it to Tegucigalpa
for use at El Hogar.
El Hogar Projects' former Executive Directors,
Rev. Barry and Kay Wyckham, are from the Vancouver area. Barry
and Kay served
as Executive Directors from 2000-2003. They currently reside
in Sidney, British Columbia, where Barry serves as a parish priest.
In December of 2006, The Bake House, a popular
small cafe in West Vancouver, Canada, with the assistance
of Grade 6 and 7 students from Chartwell Elementary School, hosted
a Christmas fund-raiser for El Hogar that was very successful. Read
more about this event here.
There
are many ways you can support El Hogar. Below are some suggestions
for how you can become involved. For more information,
please

Our sponsorship program offers a relationship with a specific child.
Your child will write to you a few times throughout the year
and, if you would like, you are encouraged to write to them.
Our children
are very moved by the interest, love and caring they feel through
this sponsorship program; they know someone far away cares enough
about them to help support them at El Hogar
There are three kinds of sponsorship:
(amounts below are given in US dollars)
Educational - $600 a year or $50/month
Housing -
$900 a year or $75/month
Full -
$1500 a year or $125/month
If you live in Canada and wish to begin a sponsorship, please
write a letter saying what kind of sponsorship you would like
and
enclose
a cheque
(tax-deductible)
made out to Leaside United Church – Honduran
Fund, and
mail to:
Margo Mingay
454 Heath Street East
Toronto, Ontario
Canada M4G 1B7
If you have additional questions about sponsorships, they
may be answered on our Sponsorship FAQs page.
There are many needs at El Hogar. An unrestricted
gift of $60 feeds 80 little children for one day. $500 pays
a teacher’s
salary for one month. $100 buys drinking water at the Farm
for one year. $1000 feeds all 200 boys for one week.*
Please
make cheques out to Leaside United Church – Honduran
Fund
and mail to:

*amounts given in US dollars
all monetary donations will receive a tax deductible receipt
Mission teams travel to El Hogar for a week and spend time
doing a project for the school, and becoming acquainted with
our boys. Teams learn to be servants to others and see the
transformation of the lives of
these children. Read more about how
you can join an El Hogar work team.
There are several larger items that El Hogar needs. These
change over time, but current examples include: a van, appliances
such as laundry machines, mattresses, printer cartridges,
etc. Rotary Clubs and churches that prefer to organize drives
for more substantial specific items may be interested in
these needs.
Please contact Margo Mingay, at minwin@sympatico.ca to
find out more about how you can make a larger contribution.
El Hogar’s long-term volunteer program has hosted qualified
individuals and couples to volunteer for two to twelve months
at El Hogar. Volunteers live in community with our boys and
staff and provide a wide variety of services, including supervision
of the boys, teaching, supporting the staff, and helping work
teams when they come.
As of January 2006, our long-term volunteer program is temporarily on hold as
we turn our attention to making revisions and improvements to the program. Please
check in with this site over time, and watch for information in our newsletter,
to see when the new program will become effective.
